MATERIALS REQUIRED
PAINTING: Levels 1 through 4 FALL
2005
ART 220-320-321-420
Note:
the college bookstore will carry all
the items listed below. They will charge manufacturer’s suggested retail price.
You may find better prices online or through catalog order companies, or in a
large art store like Michael’s Arts and Crafts (in Lexington, there is one at
2309 Nicholasville Road,; phone 859-277-1022. Here are some online retailers:
Brushes
1. Hog
Bristle brushes, Flats: one of each size: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. The bookstore sells Grumbacher Academy Flats.
The
set of six brushes listed above will cost about $50. The Grumbacher brushes are high quality
student-grade—not professional-grade, which is far more expensive. Other similar quality priced hog
bristle brushes may be substituted, but avoid the super cheap kinds, they do
not work well. Other good brands include Dick Blick “Studio”, Robert Simmons
“Signet”, Daniel Smith “Dependable”, and Winsor & Newton “University”. Any good art supply store
will be able to recommend other comparable brands.
2. Princeton Synthetic Filbert: one size 4.
The
synthetic brushes are softer than bristle brushes. They are useful for fine
detail. We don’t need them often, so they are supplementary to the main set of
brushes. A “filbert” looks pretty much like a “flat” but it slightly tapered
for greater versatility. They cost a little more than flats. Other good brands include Robert
Simmons “Sienna” and Grumbacher “Bristlette”. If you look for a substitute,
make sure the brush is intended for use with oil paint.
Oil
Colors
The
bookstore will carry Grumbacher Pre-tested Oil Paints. These
are a well-known and good quality paint that is in the middle of the price
range. They are distinctly better than “student-grade” paints which are often
quite horrible. You should be able to find this make anywhere.
The
following colors will be required of all painting students:
1. Flake White 150 ml--note large tube size.
Titanium White or Mixed White is a good substitute.
2. Ivory Black, 37 ml
3. Burnt Sienna, 37 ml
4. Burnt Umber, 37 ml
5. Raw Umber, 37 ml
6. Yellow Ochre, 37 ml
7. Cadmium Yellow Light, 37ml
8. Alizarin Crimson, 37 ml
9. Cadmium-Barium Red Light, 37 ml.
10. Ultramarine Blue Deep, 37 ml
11. Prussian Green, 37 ml
12. Sap Green, 37 ml
Accessories. One
of each:

painting.
· Brush Cleaning Jar (just the jar, not the cleaning
fluid). The Bookstore has two kinds, both are fine.
· White acrylic gesso, at least a quart, but no more
than a gallon.
· Double palette cups. Diameter of 1¼” or more is good. Larger ones are fine.
General

A gallon of mineral
spirits.
·
A razor-blade scraper
with a few spare blades

roller, about 4” inches wide, for gesso.

PAINTING 2,
3, & 4
Own all
the supplies listed above. You may
substitute other brands of paint or brushes, but discuss them with me.
Brushes: There
is no minimum requirement, but I recommend that you expand your collection of
brushes. Try some much smaller and much larger brushes, or some synthetic
bristles, or some different shapes, particularly Filberts.
Colors: Be
sure to have the listed colors above, even if they are from a different
manufacturer.
Additional
Required Colors:
1. Transparent Red Oxide, 37 ml
2. Van Dyke Brown, 37 ml
3. Venetian Red, 37 ml
4. Cerulean Blue Hue, 37ml
5. Zinc Yellow (Lemon Yellow), 37 ml
Optional
colors to will expand your palette: I
have listed them in order of preference, so that you can try one or two if you
want.
1. Permanent Green Light, 37 ml. You can mix this, but it is
convenient. Opaque, intensely bright, cool.
3. Naples Yellow, 37ml. You can mix this, but it is convenient in painting the
figure, since it is dull and opaque.
4. Prussian Blue, 37ml. Has less violet in it than
Ultramarine, so it is easier to use in green mixes. Transparent.
