Constitution


MISSION STATEMENT B-GLAD provides education, advocacy, and support involving issues of sexual orientation to the Centre College community.
MEMBERSHIP Any full, part-time, or alumni faculty, staff, or student of Centre College is elligble to become a member of this organization, with advisor(s) considered members.
Alumni members of the organization hold membership status.
Special honorary membership can be given to individuals not included in the original description of eligibility pending a two-thirds majority vote and a quorum present.
Active members are individuals participating in meetings and activities sponsored by the organization during the current academic year.
Active membership requires attendance at a minimum of two meetings per academic year.
Persons will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, differently abled, or any social-ethnic reason.
ADVISORS Any full or part-time faculty or staff member of Centre College shall be eligible to be an advisor.
Ideally, there shall be two advisors.
Advisors shall be elected from individuals expressing an interest and voted on by the organization, requiring a two-thirds majority vote to be accepted and a quorum present.
Advisors shall be appointed to indefinite tenure with terms being shortened either by withdrawal by the individual as an advisor or by dismissal by the orgization pending a two-thirds majority vote and a quorum present.
Advisors shall assist the organization in day-to-day business and provide long-term stability.
Advisors are not legally responsible for any and all action of the organization and cannot be held liable for views expressed by individuals in the organization or the organization as a whole.

VOTING
  1. A quorum is defined as fifty-one percent of active members being present.
  2. A quorum must be present at any meeting in which voting takes place.
  3. When electing advisors or officers, one week prior notice must be given and a quorum must be present.
  4. When dismissing an advisor, officer, or member, one week prior notice must be given and a quorum must be present.
  5. Motions may only be brought to the floor and seconded with a quorum present.
  6. One vote shall be given to the advisor(s), normally not voting, in the case of a tie to establish a majority.
MEETINGS Meetings will be designated as either private or social/public.
Any member of the Centre community may attend a public meeting. Private meetings will be closed to the campus community with the exception of individuals having shown interest in the organization and winning approval of at least two executive officers.
Meetings of the Executive Staff, for the purpose of organization business, will be held separately from meetings of the organization at large.

ARTICLES of the CONSTITUTION
  1. The name of the organization shall be Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians, and Allies for Dignity, with the acronym B-GLAD.
  2. The organization shall have an executive staff consisting of: two co-presidents (ideally one male, one female), one internal affairs officer, and one external affairs officer.
  3. The co-presidents' duties include but are not limited to: the appointment of committees, the direction of organization activities, the planning of meetings, and administrative oversight.
  4. The internal affairs officer shall handle the duties of secretary, treasurer, and advise the organization on issues concerning current members, organization structure, and day-to-day operations of the organization.
  5. The external affairs officer shall handle the duties of public affairs officer and advise the organization on issues concerning possible members, the campus community, and public image.
  6. Election of officers shall take place within the first three weeks of Spring Term for any calendar year with terms expiring upon election of new officers the following Spring Term.
    Officers shall be elected by majority vote of active members with a quorum present.
    Nominations and seconds shall come from the floor.
    Officers ideally should be able to serve the entirety of their term; however, members will not be prohibited from holding office it is known they will be forced to resign the office before the expiration of their term for academic-related reasons (study aborad, internship, graduation, etc.).
    Elections may be moved to Center Term of any calendar year if the change is deemed to be in the best interest of the organization by the Executive Staff.
  7. There shall be no limit as to the number of terms held in any position by any one individual.
  8. In the event an officer is unable to fulfill the duties of his/her office, that officer shall submit a letter or resignation to the Executive Staff.
    Upon receipt of this letter, elections shall be announced and a member elected to fill the rest of the term.
  9. Whenever a prospective advisor or officer is to be elected, or an advisor, officer, or member is to be removed from the organization, the individual(s) must be permitted the opportunity to address the quorum and express their views.
  10. No individual member shall act in the organization's name without a two-thirds majority approval of a quorum.
  11. Membership status may be revoked when it is deemed by a two-thirds majority vote and a quorum present that the individual is no longer acting in the best interests of the organization and adequate other means have been tried to correct the situation.
  12. Any of the Articles of the Constitution may be changed with a two-thirds majority vote with a quorum present with one week prior notice given, and subject to the approval of the advisor(s).
