Academic vs. Non-Credit InternshipsCentre College offers two types of internships: academic credit and non-credit internships. An academic-credit internship requires the supervision of a faculty member and an on-site supervisor. These internships require the combination of a substantive academic component along with a significant career-related component. A student participating in an academic credit internship will receive up to 3 credits for their experience, which will be listed on their transcripts. (A student can receive up to a total of 6 internship credits during their junior and senior years.) Although the credits count toward graduation, they do not count toward specific major requirements. These internships are closely monitored by the Internship Coordinator. Only juniors and seniors are eligible to participate in credit-bearing internships. Non-credit internships do not require college credit and are often, but not always, completed during the summer. All arrangements for the experience are made directly between the student and employer (although you may find internship opportunities listed on eRecruiting or in Career Services), and Career Services does not monitor the experience. The experience may be listed on a resume, but will not be listed on the student's transcripts. As opposed to an academic credit internship, a student may participate in this type of internship any time during their college career. For more information about Centre College internships, go to our Internships webpage.
