New Extraordinary Success Program

Centre College is excited to announce The Extraordinary Success Program (ESP)! This new program seeks to encourage Centre seniors to pursue a broader range of outstanding graduate or professional school opportunities, particularly those that are out of state. The objectives of this program include encouraging thoughtful conversation between faculty and students regarding graduate school planning and analysis as to which graduate schools are a good match for the individual.

The program will be administered through Career Services. Students will submit a faculty sponsored proposal which will be reviewed by a committee appointed by the President. Proposals will include a cover letter outlining graduate school aspirations, a record of appropriate graduate or professional school standardized testing, a letter of support from a faculty sponsor, an expense budget, and a resume. The committee will evaluate proposals based on the quality of the student's graduate or professional school plans (with a reasonable expectation of admission) and whether or not the student will receive travel funding from their proposed graduate school. Included in the proposal should be a statement from the student and faculty sponsor giving the reasons why a given institution is particularly well respected within the field and why the match between the student and the institution is strong. Students must have at least a 3.35 Centre grade point average to be considered.

Applications will be reviewed twice a year with deadlines of November 1 and February 1. If the proposal is approved, the student will be reimbursed up to $750 (depending on the budget approved and receipts submitted) in order to apply to, and, if applicable, visit the graduate school.

Contact Carey Thompson or Mindy Wilson for more information about this exciting new program!

Law School Fair

The annual Law School Fair will take place on Tuesday, October 3rd from 3:00-5:00pm in the Warehouse.

Among the many law schools that will be attending: UK School of Law, Louis D. Brandeis School of Law (U of L), Vanderbilt University, Indiana University-Bloomington, and Washington and Lee. For a more complete list of law schools, visit our website. Please encourage students who are interested in a career in law to attend!

6th Annual Etiquette Dinner

Do your students know where to sit at the table in relation to their host, how to politely excuse themselves from the table, how to properly eat different types of food, or what all those utensils are for?!?!?  The annual Etiquette Dinner for students covers all of this and much more!  This year's event is on Wednesday, November 1 at 5:30 pm in the Evans-Lively Room (formerly the Carnegie Club).  Students enjoy a formal, five-course dinner while learning all about business and dining etiquette.  Plus, they will receive a certificate of completion and a 50-page etiquette booklet for future reference (at a cost of only $5).  Seats fill up quickly, so encourage your students to call today! The deadline to reserve a seat is October 25th.

Law School Application Waivers

The University of St. Thomas Law School in Minneapolis, MN has announced it will waive its $50 application fee for every applicant that applies on-line (on their site or through the LSDAS) before December 31, 2006. There are other schools that offer these incentives, so be sure to look before you pay. Encourage your students to call Jamey Leahey, College attorney and law school advisor (ext. 5224), with any questions about their law school application process.

Request for Tutors

Recently, Sherri Gowins sent all faculty a request for tutors for local middle and high school students. If you know of a student who would be a good tutor for your specific area of study, please send Sherri their names and subject areas at any time during the year.
