Internship of the Month

The Tennessee State Government's Careers Now Program is designed for students from Tennessee who would like to gain more experience in a variety of government departments, such as accounting, law, finance, IT and typical government positions. If you know of any interested students, please have them contact Mindy Wilson at 8792 for more information.

Contact Career Services for more information about Internships, Workshops or Events. If you'd like to see other offerings, would like Career Services to make a presentation for your class, group or major, or assist with planning a career panel for a major or club, please give us a call or drop us an e-mail. We'd be happy to help!

Spotlight 2008: Job and Internship Fair

For 23 years, Centre has joined with Kentucky's other private colleges and universities to host the "Spotlight Job and Internship Fair" where typically over 50 employers come to recruit students for post-graduate jobs and summer internships nationwide. This is a great chance to meet employers and have students' resumes seen. This year's fair will take place on Tuesday, February 26 from 2:00-5:00pm at The Lexington Center. To register, students must attend one of three information/resume critique sessions or come by Career Services for a brief resume critique. We will provide students with information packets and a website where they can research companies and their job openings. Encourage your students to call Career Services to register today!

Current registered employers include (but are not limited to) Americorps, Insight Media, the IRS, Saint Joseph Health System, the Peace Corps and several banks. For more information about attending employers, go to https://asp.symplicity.com/ spotlight/. (Please note that students must sign up in Career Services, not through this website, and that employers often register at the last minute, so check back often up until the date of the fair for updates.)

Teach for America

A message from Teach for America:

"By the fourth grade, African-American, Latino/Hispanic and Native American students read on average three grade levels behind their Caucasian peers.

This is not for lack of potential, but for lack of opportunity.

Educational inequity is our nation's greatest injustice – yet it is solvable. Teach For America's mission is to enlist the nation's most promising future leaders of all majors  in the movement to eliminate this injustice. We do this by calling upon our country's most promising future leaders to commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and to become lifelong leaders to expand educational opportunity for all.

The final application deadline is Friday, February 15th, 2008 (11:59 p.m. PDT, 2:59 a.m. EDT).

Seeking all academic majors. Full salary and benefits. No previous education experience or coursework necessary.

In addition, the new International Students Pilot Program will enable students holding a valid F-1 visa and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in math, statistics, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, or other sciences to apply to Teach For America (www.teachforamerica.org
/international_students
has more details on eligibility requirements.)

To learn more, visit www.teachforamerica.org, contact admissions@teachforamerica.org, or subscribe to our e-newsletter."

Extraordinary Success Program = Money for Grad School Applications/Interviews!

The Extraordinary Success Program (ESP) seeks to encourage Centre seniors to pursue a broader range of outstanding graduate or professional school opportunities, particularly those that are out of state by providing funds to assist with applying to grad school (including travel). This program is for future applications and can be applied retroactively for fall applications.

This year's second deadline is fast approaching! The deadline to apply is February 15. If the proposal is approved, the student will be reimbursed up to $750 (depending on the budget approved and receipts submitted) in order to apply to, and, if applicable, visit the graduate school.

Go to the ESP website and encourage your students to contact their career counselor for more information about this opportunity for students.

Careers in Foreign Service

Career Services is sponsoring two information sessions relating to careers in foreign service in February:

  • Hans G. Klemm, the Ambassador to Timor-Leste, will be speaking about careers in the foreign service in the Nichols Dining Room (Cowan) on Feb. 5 at 5:00.  Grab your dinner and join in (no sign-ups required).  If you would like to speak informally with Mr. Klemm, he'll be in the Davidson Room in Career Services to speak individually with interested students 3:30-4:30.
  • The Peace Corps will give an information session about how to apply and what to expect as a Peace Corps volunteer on February 28 at 12:00pm in Career Services. Pizza will be provided, so encourage students to call or email Career Services to sign up!
