Recruiting Trends As spring approaches, many students are thinking about the job search. It might be helpful to know what employers say about hiring new college graduates! Employers consistently say they are looking for candidates with some basic transferable skills. These include: good communication skills, problem-solving abilities, leadership, and flexibility. Employers have also commented on student expectations of the work force. They say that students expect to make significantly more money and have higher job classifications than what is typical of a starting position. Over the last three years, recruiters have reported a shift toward “across the board” majors. They believe this helps provide the intangible skills which are listed above. Employers also indicate that students are becoming more reluctant to relocate. Employers say this reluctance limits the student's job opportunities and can affect their opportunities for advancement. (Source: “Recruiting Trends and the Economy: A Southern Employer Retreat Roundtable” by Troy D. Nunamaker and Flora Riley. The National Association of Colleges and Employers 50th Anniversary Journal, October 2006.) In an article entitled “New Workers Not Ready for Prime Time” by Theresa Minton-Eversole and Kathy Gurchiek, found in the December 2006 issue of HR Magazine, future skills needed by graduates were discussed. The authors conducted a survey in which survey participants ranked creativity and innovation among the top five applied skills expected to increase in importance. Also mentioned was knowledge of foreign languages, cultures, and global markets. “63% of survey participants listed foreign languages as increasing in importance more than any other basic knowledge area or skill.”

Twenty-two Centre students attended, and among the 57 employers attending were Clear Channel, the Commonwealth of Kentucky Personnel Cabinet, FBI, Lexmark, National City, Peace Corps, and Toyota. We're already making plans for next year's event, so pass the word on to students that this is a great way to network for future jobs and internships!
