Social Networking Websites

Did you know that in a survey done by Chris Wiley and Mark Sisson at the University of Dayton, they found that:

  • 40% of employers consider Facebook profiles fair game in evaluating a candidate for employment.
  • Approximately 1/3 of students think it is unethical for employers to check out their Facebook profiles. Only 17% of employers agreed.
  • 35% of students said they belonged to Facebook groups that don't accurately depict who they really are; 26% said they've posted information about their alcohol or drug use; 23% said they have intentionally misrepresented themselves on Facebook as a joke.
(Source: The Campus Career Counselor, January 2007. Originally from a University of Dayton news release, November 27, 2006 .)

In addition, in 2007, 11.1% of employers polled by the National Association of Colleges and Employers planned to visit social networking sites to gauge college job candidates. Another 40.5% said they were considering this option. (source: "College Recruiting and Hiring: What to Watch in 2007." Mimi Collins, National Association of Colleges and Employers Journal, December 2006.)

What does this mean for students? Students should consider what content they include on Facebook, myspace, etc. when applying for a job, internship or grad school! Would you hire or accept the persona that they've created? If not, encourage them to clean it up!

Summer Centre Internship Plus

Do you know of any students who are applying for great summer internships? Encourage them to apply for Centre Internship Plus, Centre's unique competitive funding program for summer and CentreTerm internships. If selected, summer interns will receive up to $1500 for their quality experience.

Spotlight 2008: Job and Internship Fair Wrap-Up

This year's Spotlight 2008: Job and Internship Fair was successful, to say the least! Thirty-seven Centre students attended, and among the 49 employers attending were the Administrative Office of the Courts, Eli Lilly, Exstream Software, General Electric, and Peace Corps. We're already making plans for next year's event, so keep in mind that this is a great way to network for future jobs and internships!
