Job Search Tips

As May approaches, so does graduation, and that means that seniors should be in full-swing job-hunting mode. We have gathered a few tips to make the search a little easier:

  • Treat the job search like an additional class while in school. Treat it like a full-time job after graduation.
  • Your resume is key to getting an interview. Make sure your resume is up to date and easy to read, fax, scan, and upload. Target it toward the job for which you are applying.
  • Put together a well-written and targeted cover letter and include it with your resume whenever possible.
  • Practice interviewing!! Know how to answer a behavior-based interview question and how to use examples to strengthen your answers.
  • Network, network, network. Networking is NOT asking someone for a job. Networking IS asking someone for information about a career, job, or company.
  • Clean up your Facebook/Myspace site. Yes, employers do look at those.
  • Be very careful about the message on your answering machine/cell phone.
  • Do check out federal jobs as some places have increased hiring (such as the civilian jobs at Fort Knox) .
  • Be patient and persistent. Be professional at all times to everyone you meet.

Using eRecruiting for the Job Search

If you are not already familiar with it, Career Services uses an internet-based job search system called eRecruiting to advertise jobs, internships, summer jobs, and graduate assistantships. Students can access this system from any computer with internet and can search job openings by a variety of criteria, such as type of employer, type of job, and/or location. If your students cannot access their eRecruiting account, they should contact their career counselor for their password and/or to make an appointment. Currently, eRecruiting has almost 90 jobs and over 550 internships posted! Students can always get to eRecruiting from the Career Services homepage.

Job Search Links

Did you know that students can access hundreds of jobs from the Career Services website? Just click on "Job Search" in the left-hand menu and choose an option. There are several options, including "Full-time Job Search," "Jobs by Region," and "Government Jobs," among others. All of these categories include hundreds of links to job search engines and specific groups and companies who may be hiring. So, encourage students to stop on by during their job search!

Fall Internships

Sophomores and juniors will soon be registering for classes, and what better way to learn more about possible future careers than to participate in an internship?! Sophomores and juniors are eligible to participate in an internship for credit. The deadline to turn in the contract is May 12. For more information, students should see our page about academic-credit internships and make an appointment today to talk to their career counselor by calling 859-238-5283.

The Boston Consulting Group Comes to Campus

Attention Sophomores and Juniors! Robert Alford from The Boston Consulting Group will be in Crounse Rm. 313, Friday April 3, 2009 at 11:30 AM. He will discuss types of consulting careers, typical assignments for entry-level employees and much more. Pizza will be provided.
