What is the Job Shadowing Program?
The Job Shadowing Program is a program to help students make better informed career decisions and to help students begin to establish a professional network.
Who sponsors job shadowing opportunities?
Alumni offer several opportunities in different fields throughout the United States. The opportunities they are offering are summarized here.
When does the Job Shadowing Program take place?
Job shadowing typically last for 1 to 3 days and will take place during the break between CentreTerm and spring term. The student and the alumni sponsor will determine the exact days.
Why participate?
The benefits from this program can be invaluable. If you have a career path in mind, a job shadowing experience can be a great way to “test drive” the career before you commit to participating in an internship or taking a first job in the field. You will also have the opportunity to network with not only your sponsor, but other people with whom the sponsor works. Sometimes, a job shadowing sponsor may have contacts that can provide jobs and internships for the student. In addition, a job shadowing experience can be included on your resume.
What if my job shadowing experience is a distance from home or Centre?
You are responsible for all travel expenses, meals, and housing connected with the job shadowing experience. A few alumni may offer to provide housing. If so, it is specified on the sponsor form. Limited financial help may be available. E-mail Deb Jones if you need financial assistance. Please note that financial assistance will not cover 100% of your costs.
How can I apply for the Job Shadowing Program?
1. Read all the job shadowing descriptions and think about how each description relates to your career goals. Select your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices and locate their appropriate “Job Shadowing Sponsor” numbers on the upper right of the entry. Write their numbers on the application form in order of your preference.
2. Email a resume and brief essay stating why you should be selected for the job shadowing program to Deb Jones. Be sure to include why you are interested in the three choices you have selected, what you have done to explore your career options, and how this job shadowing experience will benefit you. If your three choices are not in similar career fields, please include an essay for each choice.
3. Submit your application, essay and resume to Career Services by Wednesday, November 4. Please make sure your application is complete by this date! Applications will be accepted at any time before this date.
What is the next step?
On approximately Monday, November 9, you will receive an e-mail telling you which job shadowing experience you have been matched with. Upon receiving an job shadowing match, you are required to attend an orientation meeting held on Thursday, November 12 at 11:30 a.m. in Career Services (pizza will be provided). At this meeting, you will receive the name of your sponsor and information on how to make contact.
Where do I call if I have questions?
