Economics Program Brochure        New Major:  Financial Economics

The Economics Program provides determined students with the tools they need to become successful leaders in business, government, and society.  The Program offers a broad background in economics within a liberal arts educational philosophy.  The economics curriculum serves four goals in the interests of our students:  competence in the fundamentals of economic theory; capability in communication and quantitative tools for economic analysis and presentation; familiarity with economic processes, policies, and institutions; and acquaintance with critical perspectives on both economic theory and institutions.  Economics majors enjoy considerable choice in the selection of electives.  Courses, internships, foreign study, and independent study can be arranged to highlight particular student interests.  Within this framework, students have the option to assemble courses that concentrate on, for example, banking and finance, international economics, or policy analysis, and to prepare for graduate programs in such fields as business, law, public policy, and economics.

Why Economics Might Be Right For You

Economics majors learn skills for problem solving that apply in myriad situations, and these tools are marketable.  A July 2001 salary survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) notes that the average beginning salary offer to economics/finance graduates was $40,577, an increase of 8.2% since last year.  The NACE's Job Outlook 2001 included economics as a college major that employers indicated will be among the most demanded in the near future.

Studying economics has proven to be a successful path for men and women in many fields.  Rock and roller Mick Jagger, professional baseball pitcher Mike Mussina, journalist Bill Buckley, former U.S. President George H. W. Bush, and Senator Phil Gramm might not seem to have much in common, but they all share fame, fortune, and a degree in economics.  While an economics major won't assure  you a seat in the Senate or a World Series ring, it can propel you into a fulfilling career or a distinguished graduate program.

Centre's economics faculty members are here to serve your educational needs.  Prospective students can schedule an appointment with a faculty member through the Office of Admissions. or
