She has extensive experience teaching science at the junior high, high school, and college level. Her areas of interest include children's career aspirations, equity issues, and the teaching of science using childrens literature. She is a faculty sponsor for the LIFT ("Learning Is Fun Together") Program, an enrichment experience for local fourth and fifth grade children. She teaches Educational Psychology, Science Methods and the elementary level Planning, Evaluation and Classroom Management course.

(859) 238-6223 Email: jhatkins@centre.edu B.A., Kentucky State University; M.A., Eastern Kentucky University. Atkins holds certification in Instructional Supervision (K-12), Principalship (K-12); and Superintendency along with his lifetime teaching credentials.
He currently serves as assistant vice president and associate professor of education at Centre College. He has taught (and coached) in a variety of public schools at the elementary, middle, and high school levels; also he has extensive administrative experience as an elementary principal and as an assistant superintendent (Director of Elementary Schools in Fayette County). At Centre, Atkins teaches Introduction to Education as well as Social Studies Methods. In addition, he assists with elementary and secondary student teachers and with diversity activities for the College. He also coordinates the Whitney M. Young Scholars on-campus program. J. H. Atkins' contributions to the success of the local schools were recognized by the Danville alumni association. The Anchoring the Tradition Award recognizes those employees who did not graduate from the Danville schools but have made a significant impact on the schools.

Sarah Murray joined the Centre faculty in 2006. She has teaching experience at both the secondary and post-secondary level. In addition, she has worked with K-12 teachers as a resource coordinator during her experience with the Appalachia Math and Science Partnership. Her area of interest is peer mentoring and its effects on classroom instruction and student achievement. She teaches Math Methods in addition to the secondary level Planning, Evaluation and Classroom Management course.

Mary Rudd joined the Education program in 2008. Her previous experience in public education include teaching and coaching at the secondary level, serving as an assistant principal, a curriculum coordinator, and most recently in Jefferson County schools as a Highly Skilled Educator with the Kentucky Department of Education. Her primary teaching and research interests include language arts education, reading in the content areas, closing the achievement gap, improving school culture and climate, teacher leadership, and change leadership.

Candace Bonnett is an instructor of education at Centre. She has taught at Georgetown College and Bluegrass Community Technical College. Her areas of specialization include educational technology, multimedia, image editing, html development, and to provide training and support to the Centre College faculty, students and staff. Bonnett teaches EDU 226, the Educational Technology course.

Bradley H. NystromProfessor Emeritus![]()

B.A., St. Olaf College; M.A., University of Wisconsin; Ph.D., University of WisconsinNystrom taught at Centre from 1973 to 2006. He has also taught at Moshi Secondary School in Tanzania, Stillwater High School in Minnesota, and Carleton College. He specialized in secondary education and worked closely with students preparing to teach at the secondary level. He is interested in comparative education studies and has visited schools in India, Egypt, Russia and East Africa. In January 2004 he visited the University of Dar es Salaam and other parts of Tanzania, and in 2005 he received a grant to bring a Tanzanian professor, Dr. Peter Chonjo, to Centre to assist in teaching a freshman seminar.
