C. COMPONENTS OF THE CERTIFICATION PROCESS

The basic steps in the certification process are as follows:
If you plan to participate in a Study Abroad Program, it is recommended
that you participate in this experience during the sophomore year. Centre term during junior
or senior year is another possibility for such an experience.

Acquire information on Centre's Teacher Education Program and the Continuous Assessment Plan; Decide on area of specialization and level of certification desired -- all levels (P-12), elementary (P-5), or secondary (8-12).
Become involved in working with public school students. See the CARE office or the education faculty for suggestions.
Take EDU 227 (during the Centre Term) and/or EDU 228 (Spring), familiarize yourself with Centre's Conceptual Framework, and complete early field experiences in the local schools.
Take EDU 226 -- Education and Technology (in the fall of your sophomore year, if possible).
Make formal application for admission to the Education Program including a presentation to the Teacher Education Committee.  (Usually occurs in the spring of sophomore year).
Complete Phase 2 of the Continuous Assessment Process -- junior courses in Education and successful completion of the Phase 2 portfolio.
Complete major course requirements and education courses.
Present Phase 3 portfolio to a subcommittee of the Teacher Education Program/Committee and meet the other requirements for admission to student teaching. (Phase 3 of the Continuous Assessment Process).
Successfully complete student teaching and all aspects of Centre's Framework based on the Kentucky Teacher Standards.
Take the appropriate Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching exam as well as the specialty area exam(s), and meet the minimum scores established by the Kentucky Department of Education. (Please ensure your scores are reported to the Kentucky Department of Education and to Centre College.)
Apply to the Kentucky Department of Education for a "Statement of Eligibility."  This statement is valid for a five-year period and allows the holder to seek a teaching position.
Obtain a teaching position. To complete the Kentucky certification process, teachers must participate in the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program. During the initial year of teaching, beginning teachers are assessed and evaluated by a three-person committee. Upon successful completion of the internship year, a teacher is awarded a Kentucky Provisional Certificate.
