K. FIELD & LABORATORY EXPERIENCES

You must successfully complete a background check prior to field experiences in local classrooms.
Background Check Form Complete this form and submit it to Professor Plummer or Professor Atkins.

The Centre College Education Program requires each student to spend a total of 200 hours in field experiences and laboratory experiences prior to student teaching. At least 100 hours of the 200 hour total must be in field experiences in the schools. Each of the education courses listed below includes out-of-class or field experiences as an integral part of the course.

The normal expectation is for students to spend at least 25 hours in the schools during each long-term when taking one or more education courses.

The following is the suggested number of hours for each course in elementary education although it is recognized that there might be considerable variation in the field experience hours for specific courses:

It is recognized that there will often be variation from the number of hours of field and laboratory experiences suggested for each course. The requirement for 200 total hours must still be met. Students may accumulate hours independent of the courses named above, but these experiences should be approved in advance by one of the teacher education faculty. For such experiences, a minimum record would include a log describing and analyzing the experiences, a list of the hours, and a signature of the teacher or supervisor of the experience. It is strongly suggested that students spend time volunteering with Danville or Boyle County school activities or programs and/or tutoring or working with LIFT or one of the other programs coordinated by CARE. Participation in the student Society of Future Educators/Kentucky Education Association is also recommended.

The teacher education faculty will maintain a record of all hours, and it is the student's responsibility to report and document all hours outside of courses. Students will not be admitted to student teaching until the minimum 200 hours have been accumulated.
