P. Field Experience Dress Guidelines

Centre students participating in field experience classrooms will adhere to the following professional dress guidelines:

  • no denim (unless school rules permit for professional staff)
  • no shorts or short skirts
  • no tranparent clothing
  • midriff and chest to be covered (even while in movement)
  • no revealed undergarments
  • no t-shirts or tank (or spaghetti strap or muscle) tops
  • no flipflops
  • no advertisements of inappropriate products
  • tattoos covered
  • unusual body piercings removed or covered

What should you wear? Suggestions include:

  • khakis or twill slacks
  • button down or collared blouse or shirt
  • appropriate footwear (tennis shoes, comfortable dress shoes or sandals)
  • dress appropriately for the events of the day

Overall guideline: Do you have to change your clothes when you return to campus? Or, are you ready to party?

As Mr. J. Leber, retired principal at Junction City Elementary School, noted "If you dress for a party, that's what you're going to get in a classroom."

In addition to dress guidelines, you should

  • demonstrate responsibility through punctuality and reliability for your class visits
  • communicate regularly with your supervising teacher

Why should you adhere to these guidelines?

  • As a visitor you are somewhat of a novelty to a classroom of students. You should not distract from the learning environment. You are in the classroom to learn--not to serve as a source of entertainment for the students.
  • Your image sets up a perception of who you are as a person in addition to your potential as an educator.
  • A failure to meet these guidelines indicates a disposition toward teaching that lacks respect for the institution of school as well as a lack of personal judgement. Although rebels are often admired, a lack of professionalism in your dress may indicate you should find a profession other than teaching.
