O. PRAXIS INFORMATION

Students must meet the passing scores on required Praxis exams to be certified in Kentucky. Current requirements include both the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) test and specialty area exams (sometimes called subject area exams). The PLT is a two-hour test to measure basic pedagogical and professional knowledge. Note that the appropriate grade level test must be taken. The specialty area tests (usually require two or three hours) measure content knowledge. Passing scores are adjusted periodically by the Education Professional Standards Board.

ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE YOUR PRAXIS SCORES SENT TO CENTRE (CODE 1109) AND TO THE KENTUCKY EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS BOARD (CODE R7283).

Certificates and/or statements of eligibility are not issued without verification that the Praxis exams scores meet the state's requirements. Therefore, it is not advisable to take the Praxis exams in the summer if one hopes to secure a teaching position in the fall. Test results from the summer administration of the Praxis exams are often not available until well after the public schools begin classes in the fall.
