J. SUGGESTED TIMELINE FOR STUDENTS
First Year
- Complete as many Centre general education courses as possible, and begin to
select a major.
- In order to attain a better idea of whether or not one would enjoy teaching,
working with school-age children and adolescents as much as possible is strongly suggested.
The CARE organization in collaboration with junior elementary education majors runs an enrichment program (Learning Is Fun Together) that is recommended.
Serving as a mentor to a child placed at risk, a Big Brother/Big Sister, or volunteer coach is also strongly recommended.
Participation in the student Society of Future Educators/Kentucky Education Association is suggested as well.
- Make contact with the teacher education faculty. This is particularly vital
for students interested in elementary education, because the requirements
require some planning to ensure completion.
- For students interested in elementary education, complete as many of
the following courses as possible during the first and sophomore years:
- BIO 110 The Unity and Diversity of Life
OR NSC 110 & 120 Natural Sciences
- EDU 228 Educational Psychology (Spring Term open to first-year students)
Sophomore Year
If you plan to participate in a Study Abroad Program, it is recommended that you try to go during your sophomore year. Centre term during junior or senior year is another possibility.
- Continue working with school-age children and adolescents.
- Take EDU 226 during the fall term.
- Take EDU 227 (Practicum and Introduction to Education), which is offered
during the Centre (winter) term and EDU 228 (Educational Psychology) which
is offered in the spring term. Through these courses participate
in field experiences in local schools and become familiar with Centre's Framework.
- Elementary education students should take these courses:
- ENG 205 Children's and Adolescent Literature
- MAT 210 Mathematics in the Elementary School
- EDU 224 Fine Arts in the Elementary School
- Discuss information from the teacher education faculty, complete Phase
1 of the Continuous Assessment Plan, and make formal application for admission
to the Teacher Education Program during the spring term.
Junior Year
- Complete Phase 2 of the Continuous Assessment Plan which includes the formative Phase 2
portfolio and presentation.
- Students in secondary education as well as a K-12 certification program
should continue with courses in their majors and enroll in:
- EDU 335 (Secondary Education
Planning, Evaluation, and Classroom Management) during the fall term.
- Social Studies -- EDU 344 Social Studies Methods
- Mathematics -- EDU 345 Math Methods
- Art, French, German, Spanish -- EDU 349 Special Methods in Education
- EDU 330 (Diversity and Inclusion in the Classroom) should be taken during the fall
term of the junior or senior year.
- Elementary education majors will continue with methods courses as well as with the other requirements described above. In addition
they should enroll in:
- EDU 333 Instructional Design
- EDU 344 Social Studies Methods
- EDU 345 Math Methods
Senior Year
- For students in secondary education, the courses to take are:
- EDU 330 (Diversity and Inclusion in the Classroom) if not already completed.
- The appropriate special methods course:
- English -- EDU 342 Language Arts Methods
- Biology, Chemistry, Physics -- EDU 343 Science Methods
- Social Studies -- EDU 344 Social Studies Methods
- Mathematics -- EDU 345 Math Methods
- Art, French, German, Spanish -- EDU 349 Special Methods in Education
- EDU 553/555 (Secondary Student Teaching and Seminar in the Analysis of Teaching 12 credits).
This is offered during the spring term. Students are assessed on a
pass/unsatisfactory basis only.
- Students in elementary education should complete any remaining courses
in their emphasis areas. In
addition, students should take (if not already completed):
- EDU 330 Diversity and Inclusion in the Classroom
- EDU 342 Language Arts Methods
- EDU 343 Science Methods
- EDU 551 (Elementary Student Teaching and Seminar in the Analysis of Teaching 12 credits).
Elementary student teaching is offered only in the spring term. Students are assessed on a
pass/unsatisfactory basis only.
- Prior to student teaching all seniors should:
- Complete a TB test and a doctor's statement indicating physical fitness.
- Make formal application for admission to student teaching.
- Arrange for a criminal records check.
- Complete Phase 3 of the Continuous Assessment Plan, which involves presenting
the formative Phase 3 portfolio to a subcommittee of the Teacher Education Committee.
- Complete student teaching and Phase 4 of the Continuous Assessment Plan.
- Students should arrange to take the appropriate Praxis exams. Note the dates when the Praxis exams are offered. Remember
to have the scores reported to Centre (Code 1109) and the Education Professional
Standards Board (Code R7283).
