Study Abroad at Centre for German Studies students
There are five main ways to study abroad as a German Studies student at Centre. They are:
1. Centre-in-Strasbourg: The original satellite campus of Centre College, Centre-in-Strasbourg, allows students to study European culture, politics and economics while furthering their study of German or French. Most German Studies students study in Strasbourg, and they often have a German-language homestay while there.
2. CentreTerm trips: Though irregularly offered, there may be opportunities to take a course related to German Studies in Europe during the CentreTerm, Centre's unique three-week, one-course term in January. CentreTerm 2008 will feature a trip to Berlin, Prague, Vienna, and Munich.
3. KIIS Programs: The Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS) offers many programs during the semester and over the summer, some of which may be just right for your study abroad. A German Studies student studies in Germany on a KIIS program almost every year.
4. DAAD Programs: The German Academic Exchange Service (der Deutsche Akademische Austausch Dienst--DAAD) offers grants for American students to study in Germany. Recent award winners have included Andrew Beeler (major, '08) for study at the Universität Freiburg, and Brenna Bulach (minor, '06) for an summer internship with Henkel KGaA in Düsseldorf.
5. Fulbright fellowships: The Fulbright Commission offers two types of grants for graduating seniors who are American citizens. Four German Studies majors have been awarded Fulbrights for study in Germany.
There are also other opportunities we sometimes hear about (including the English Language Teaching Assistantship Program administered by the Austrian Fulbright Commission, in which majors Todd Ullrich ['01] and Stephen Ludlum ['07] have both participated, and Goethe-Institut courses).
