Major Requirements and Courses

Politics majors are required to take five introductory courses that cover the major subfields of the discipline. Introduction to Political Ideologies and Introduction to Comparative Politics are first-year courses. Introduction to American Politics, Introduction to International Relations, and Introduction to Political Analysis are sophomore courses. These courses provide the basic information necessary to take advanced courses and help to develop analytical and communication skills.

After completing these courses, students may go in a number of directions. The major requires at least six advanced courses, including Western Political Theory and the Government Senior Seminar. The minor requires two advanced courses.

If you are class of 2013, 2014, or 2015, you are "grandfathered" into the previous major/minor requirement systems. NO CHANGE.

If you are class of 2016, all curricular changes apply with the exception of the POL 110 and POL 120 requirements. Those who take GOV 110 during the 2012-2013 academic year will fulfill the POL 110 and POL 120 requirement with that course. They would then be required complete all other curricular requirements under the revised system.

If you are class of 2017 or later, all curricular changes apply.
