Summer Jobs

The Greatest Mathematicians of the 20th Century

While you're studying at Centre College, you may interested in participating in an internship. Career Services has a physical list of various opportunities that are available. You can also explore the following possibilities on-line:

These links will take you to the program descriptions of various summer job and internship opportunities, several of which we have had recent mathematics majors successfully pursue. All of these programs provide a stipend (around $2500) and most provide housing and transportation allowances as well. Also, check out Career Advising website and the job descriptions posted below the links.

Some Links for Jobs

A number of programs for undergraduate research in mathematics and other fields are listed below. There are also several excellent webpages with extensive listing of additional programs. The application deadlines for these programs are in late January and mid February. So, check out the following webpages:

  • NSF Listing of REUs for all disciplines
  • MAA listing of REUs

  • The NASA Academy
The Academy consists of competitively selected students from all 50 states working on research projects at one of two field centers:
    • Goddard Space Flight Center NASA Academy -- Earth and Space Science, and Technology Development, Space Policy/Journalism (10 weeks)
    • Ames Research Center NASA Academy -- Astrobiology (10 weeks)

  • Center for Industrial and Mathematics and Statistics Summer Research Program
This eight week program at Worchester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts offers outstanding undergraduate students the opportunity to work on mathematical and statistical problems in close collaboration with faculty and industrial sponsors. The program is designed to provide a glimpse of the ways that advanced mathematics is used in the real world to solve complex problems. The students will work on problems which begin with a real-life problem generated by our industrial sponsors.

Some Job Postings

  • Humana
Humana is interested in talking with any student at Centre College who might be interested in the actuarial field, or who knows very little about it, but would like some more information. The last two years, Centre math majors who were rising seniors participated in Humana's summer internship program. This program is a great chance for a student to "test the waters" and see if this type of work environment suits them. If there is enough interest, we'd be happy to come down for an information session in the Winter or Spring term. For more information contact: Wes Royce ('96 Centre math major) at wroyse@humana.com .

  • SAFECO Corporation
