Scholarship
We, as Undergraduate Members of women’s fraternities, stand for good scholarship…
-The Panhellenic Creed
Greek women are leaders, but they are also dedicated scholars. The average sorority GPA has been consistently higher than the all-women’s average, and all of the chapters have programs and offices designed to promote good scholarship. For example:
● Alpha Delta Pi offers weekly incentives for scholastic achievement, such as “Smart Cookies,” which reward sisters who have demonstrated academic excellence that week with a batch of cookies.
● Delta Delta Delta hosts “Major Madness” during finals study breakers, during which chapter members come and write down their major or potential major. This encourages the women to think about their interests before the time comes to officially choose their major.
● Kappa Alpha Theta hosts a "Finals Fiesta" every semester. Chapter members come to enjoy some healthy Mexican food while mingling with their sisters and taking a much needed study break.
● Kappa Kappa Gamma had an A-chain competition between its pledge classes last year. Seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen competed against one another to see whose chain (made of paper links with members’ grades for tests and papers written on them) would reach the ground first.
The Panhellenic Council aims to promote scholarship in the Greek community and recognize the scholastic achievements of its member organizations as well as those of individual sorority women.
● This year the IFC and PHC co-hosted an Academic Appreciation Luncheon, faculty and students were invited.
Awards for scholastic achievement are distributed at the end of the year at Grand Chapter, a yearly celebration showcasing the achievements of the Greek community. Recent winners of these awards include:
2009 Outstanding Greek Scholar: Danielle Dodson
2009 Chapter Highest GPA Award: Kappa Alpha Theta
2009 Award for Fraternal Excellence in Scholarship Programming: Kappa Kappa Gamma
