The Creation Museum Controversy. Crounse 302.
In 2007, the Creation Museum opened in Petersburg, KY. With high quality dioramas, films, a planetarium show, and dozens of dinosaurs, the Answers In Genesis ministry set out to make the case for a
6,000-year-old universe. From the beginning, the museum has attracted vocal criticism from secularists and more liberal religious people. It has also attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors. In CentreTerm 2008, I took my Sociology of American Religion class to see the museum and meet with its scientific and public relations staff. In this talk I will trace the controversy about the museum, outline the larger sociological questions of why there is a controversy, and present a calm account of what the museum does and does not say. Led by Dr. William (Beau) Weston, Van Winkle Professor of Sociology.
