     Each year the Centre Parents Association welcomes you to Family Weekend! This special event is a      wonderful opportunity for your whole family to experience Centre and to share time with your student. Dress is      informal. Siblings, grandparents, favorite aunts -- the whole family -- are welcome! Check under the "Danville"      section for a link to area hotels. If you have trouble finding accommodations, please call the office of parent      programs at (859) 238-5208.

     
     FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2

Join us for a specialty coffee, a soft drink, muffins, sandwiches,      and other delicious items.

     Aegon Gallery in the Jones Visual Arts Center. Paul Oberst
('77): Ceremonial Objects, Tents,      Temples and Blankets. Also, Centre students will be
     drawing an artwork on one of the walls outside the gallery
     by following written directions of the artist.

     CENTRE BOOKSTORE. No trip to Centre is complete
     without a visit to our bookstore, located downtown in the
     former Hub building - at the corner of Main and Third Streets.

     Faculty and/or advisor appointments are a traditional part of Family Weekend and give you the opportunity to      meet members of the faculty and administration. We ask that you arrange these appointments in      advance through your student. We also invite and encourage you to attend classes throughout the day.      Your son or daughter should get permission from the instructor in advance.

     DINING AT CHOWAN. Enjoy dinner in Chowan with your student. No reservations necessary; pay at the      door.

     ACADEMIC SAMPLERS. These "mini-versions" of classroom lectures and sessions on current topics for      college parents offer an excellent opportunity for parents. You don't want to miss them! No reservations, no      charge.

Join Centre Director of Library Services Stan Campbell for an exploration of how Jerry Lieber and Mike      Stoller, two teenage songwriters, started writing songs for the likes of Big Mama Thornton, Elvis Presley, The      Coasters, Peggy Lee, The Clovers, The Drifters, and The Searchers, among others, and changed American      popular music in the process. Along the way, they wrote or co-wrote such pop classics as "Charlie Brown      (He's a Clown)," "Yakety-Yak," "Poison Ivy," "Hound Dog," "Kansas City," "Young Blood," "Jailhouse Rock,"      "On Broadway," "Loving You," "Spanish Harlem," and "Stand By Me." These songs are part of the fabric of      American culture, part of the air we breathe. Listen to the original recordings as the artists are placed in      historical context.

     A Brief History of Whisk(e)y: The Early Irish, Scottish and North American Christian Churches.      Crounse 301. For over 8,000 years, human have made and consumed the beverage alcohol. Distilled      beverages are relatively more recent, most likely first produced in the sixth century AD, some 1,500 years      ago. We'll explore this history with particular attention to the Scottish and American whisk(e)y industries. Led      by Dr. Ray Hammond, Professor Emeritus of Biology.

     The Persian Gulf: "Oil and Gas Are Too Valuable To Be Burned For Fuel." Crounse 313.
     
A look at the economies, politics, and foreign relations of the countries that border the world's most critical      "oilway": Iran and Saudi Arabia. Led by Dr. Michael Hamm, Boles Professor of History.

     DramaCentre presents an award-winning play by Athol Fugard. Set in South Africa in the early 1950's, during      the era of apartheid rule, the production concerns an afternoon in the life of Hally (Harold - of the title), the 15      year old son of a lower middle class tea room owner, and Willie and Sam, the two middle aged African men      that work for his father. The theme of racial tension in the play will be used in the Centre community as a point      of discussion about current racial issues. The show has mature themes and language and brief nudity.      Unofficial rating, PG-13. Tickets may be ordered from the Norton Center box office (859) 236-4692.

     9:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.
     Devin Henderson. Combs Student Activities Center. Devin is a nationally recognized comedy magician      and college campus entertainer. Having performed his magic on FOX, CBS, and NBC, Devin has also been      featured in multiple television commercials and has taken part in a feature film. A unique display of magic,      comedy, pick-pocketing, and audience interaction, Devin's Comedy Magic Act is a smash hit on every      campus he visits. From floating a rose, to a hilarious yet amazing handcuff escape, to swallowing a balloon,      students can't get enough of this magician's crazy antics. No admission charge.

     The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Mate Selection. Crounse 302.
     
Men and women face different risks when they choose a mate. Consequently, they seek different things is a      mate - and her list is usually much longer than his. We will talk about the different and complementary ways      that men and women approach mate selection and marriage. Led by Dr. Beau Weston, VanWinkle Professor      of Sociology.

     Geology Is a BLAST! Studying Volcanoes on Site. Olin 124.
     
Dr. Conrad Shiba, Centre Professor of Chemistry, has taught about volcanoes in three different courses at      Centre. He will give an introduction to volcanoes and discuss a few specific volcanoes of interest. He will also      describe the CentreTerm course "Physical Science of Volcanoes" that is taught as a field course in New      Zealand every other year along with some of his own volcano travels.

This will be an exploration of the current state of affairs in personal transportation options. We'll compare      conventional internal combustion, diesel, fuel cell, and hybrid drive systems and attempt to forecast which will      prevail in the coming decades. Led by Dr. Mike Barton, Centre Stodghill Professor of Biology.

     TOUR OF CAMPUS. The admission office is hosting tours of the campus for any interested siblings and      friends. Meet at Old Centre. The tours are led by Centre students. Please make a reservation for the      tour by calling 800-423-6236 no later than Monday, September 28.

     MINI CONCERT. Weisiger Theatre. A popular tradition during Family Weekend - the Centre choral and      instrumental ensembles will perform under the direction of the music faculty. No charge.

     OPEN HOUSE: Career Services. Old Carnegie, first floor. Career Services is pleased to offer an open      house for the families of our students! Parents and other family members are invited to stop by Career      Services in Old Carnegie to see our facilities, meet the staff, and have some refreshments before attending      the game.

     CHOWAN FAMILY CELEBRATION & CENTRETAINMENT. Bring the whole family to Chowan for food,      fun, and music by several Centre favorites. Enjoy the music of several Centre groups, including:

     Common Time, Centre's first contemporary a cappella ensemble, comprised of both music majors and other      majors across many disciplines. This small select group specializes in doo-wop and a cappella pop styles,      adding a new edge to the Music Department and the Centre community, under the leadership of Jacob      Raderer '09

     Outletdown, winner of the 2009 Boyle County Battle of the Bands, features Centre students Cole Lanigan '09      on vocals, Landon Berry '10 on guitar, Sunil Ramaswamy '10 on bass, and Michael Campbell '10 on drums.

     Keith Dunn, Centre Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Chemistry, will entertain with vocals and      guitar.

     NOTE: No guest parking passes are required for Family Weekend. Parents may park in all student and      faculty/staff lots. Also, please get a revised Family Weekend schedule when you check in at the      Registration because some events may be added for the weekend. We encourage casual, comfortable      dress for the weekend!
