FIRST YEAR PARENT ORIENTATION 2009

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

     Saturday, August 15: Football Parent Orientation Session

          2:00-3:00 p.m.     Vahlkamp Theatre in the basement of Crounse library.

     Tuesday, August 18: Fall Athlete Parent Orientation Session

          2:00-3:00 p.m.     Vahlkamp Theatre in the basement of Crounse library.

     Note: Due to the varied move-in dates of different teams and other student groups, we are unable      to give a parent orientation separately for each group. Parents who cannot attend one of the      sessions above are welcome to join us on the general move-in orientation date, Wednesday,      August 26. On that date, you will also be able to meet your student's advisor (see schedule below).      Feel free to join us for any of the sessions.

     
     Tuesday, August 25: Parent Orientation Session

     7:00-7:30 p.m.     Friendly Faces: Services Fair
                                   Location: Lobby outside Vahlkamp Theatre, which is located in the basement of
                                   Crounse library.
                                   
                                   Representatives from many campus offices will be present with information and to answer                                    questions. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the Centre staff members that will                                    be helping you over the next four years!

                                   Offices include: Financial Aid, Student Activities, Housing, Volunteer Services, Counseling,                                    Finance, Reference Librarians, Career Services, Public Safety, Dining Services,                                    Athletics, Admission.

                                   Dessert and coffee provided.

     7:30-8:30 p.m.     You're here! Now what??
                                    Location: Vahlkamp Theatre, located in the basement of Crounse library.

                                   Join us for an informative Parent Orientation Session that will include advice about the best                                    ways to support and guide your Centre student during their four years. This Centre-specific                                    presentation will cover issues that will help you be a successful college parent.

                                   Hosted by: Mona Wyatt, Director of Parent Programs &
                                                      Kathy Miles, Director of Counseling Services

                                   (NOTE: Parents may attend either the Tuesday evening orientation OR the Wednesday                                    afternoon orientation, but it is not necessary to attend both. The same material will be                                    covered in each session. Do note that on Wed. there is a president's welcome and a                                    chance to meet your student's faculty advisor and we encourage all parents to do this.)

     IMPORTANT.    Students may NOT move into the residence halls Tuesday evening. Move-in begins                                   Wednesday morning, August 26, at 9:00 a.m. with check-In at Combs Center Warehouse.                                   While parents are attending the Tuesday evening orientation session, students are invited to                                   attend a "games night" at Sutcliffe Hall from 7-9:00 p.m. sponsored by the Student Life Office                                   and hosted by the Orientation Advisors. Snacks will be provided.

     Wednesday, August 26: Move-In Day & Parent Orientation

     9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.     Check-In at Combs Center Warehouse
                                            Students must check in first thing at Combs Center to get their room key. Then they                                             may move into the residence halls. The Centre Parents Association will be hosting                                             refreshment stations behind the residence halls. Water, lemonade, coffee and snacks                                             are available at no charge. Current Centre parents will be available to offer advice and                                             help.

     11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.   Lunch at Chowan Dining Hall
                                            Lunch will be served at Chowan; no charge for first-year students; parents and family                                             members may purchase tickets for $6.00. Children under the age of 5 may eat for free.                                             Drop in when you have time and need a break!

     2:00 p.m.                       President's Welcome
                                            Location: Alumni Gym, Sutcliffe Hall
                                            (Both students and families should attend.)

     2:30 p.m.                      Introductory Meeting with Academic Advisor
                                           Location: Various classrooms on campus - guides will lead you.
                                           (Both students and their families should attend. You and your student will be taken in                                            small groups to meet your student's academic advisor.)

     3:15-4:45 p.m.            Letting Go - And Still Being There
                                          Location: Alumni Gym, Sutcliffe Hall
                                          General parent orientation session (a repeat of the Tuesday evening session).

     4:45-5:45 p.m.        GOODBYE TIME.
                                      Time to say your farewells. Student activities will continue from this time until Sunday                                       evening. Classes begin on Monday. Relax, you're leaving them in good hands!

     Parent Handbooks will be available at the athlete orientations, the Tuesday evening orientation, and the      Wednesday orientation. Be sure to get one before you leave campus!
