Division of Humanities
Though no major or minor is offered in this program, the purpose of these courses is to introduce students to the riches of world literature in translation. These courses are especially useful to students majoring in or interested in the humanities.
Special Topics Offered 1998-2001
LIT 19 German Masterworks in Translation
An introductory study of German literature in translation. The focus of the course varies from year to year. Possible topics include the German "Novelle"; plays by Grillparzer, Schiller, Goethe; or novels by Fontane, Mann, Grass, and Wolf. (Also listed as GER 19.)
LIT 25 U.S. Latino Literature and Culture
Readings and discussion provide a foundation for developing an understanding of U.S. Latino culture. Writers include Rudolfo Anaya, Sandra Cisneros, Cherrie Moraga, Francisco Goldman, Helena Viramontes, Esmeralda Santiago, Cristina Garcia. Discussion emphasizes literary technique and issues relating to identity and language.
