Minutes!!

While we wrote on paper shoes about the swing dancing event next week, we met Megan’s puppy Petey! =)

Anyway, we’re having a swing dancing lesson and party/dance sorta thing next Wednesday (the 19th) from 7-9 PM on the first floor of the Warehouse.  Stephanie Rowe is the committee chair.  We’ve already got a sign up in Cowan, and I saw papers being put into the table tents earlier today.  Pretty much everything’s taken care of: we’re using the Holiday Ball DJ (and paying him $200), we’ve got streamers and balloons in the office to decorate with, someone’s going to buy refreshments, so all we really have to do is talk it up!! Would make a great hall program, or is a great way to learn your significant other how to dance, also makes a great first date!

We’re also bringing back Data Match this year, because it was soooo much fun last year! And even better, is that this year it will be cheap as free! We’re planning on having the results for us around Valentine’s Day, which means that the surveys should go out next week, which means that Kelly Bravo (fresh from Mexico), the committee chair, will hopefully finish creating the surveys by the end of this week.

For February, we currently have 1 event on the calendar: Bowling on the 23rd.  We’re taking things a little more slowly this month because of Greek recruitment.  We’re also thinking about having a coffeehouse sometime in the middle of February.  Ines is going to talk with some people that we may be able to get for really cheap and see when they’d be interested in doing a coffeehouse.

Note: We’re not having a talent show on Fat Tuesday, as we’ve had in the past, because of where Fat Tuesday falls this year (the 2nd week of spring term).  So we’re saving it for the Ides of March, or St. Patrick’s Day, or Earth Day, one of those other happens during spring term. =)

Moving on, we reviewed the SAC Constitution, and ratified editing that had been done on it.  Basically, the Constitution was edited so that the way we make/run committees and elections is the same in the Constitution as it is in real life.  I sent a copy of the Constitution to everyone yesterday before the meeting, so feel free to peruse it at your discretion.

Lastly, we talked about Carnival.  This year it’s going to be rather early, Apr. 8th/9th, depending on what the band we get can do.  Megan’s received the riders for our top 3 choices, They Might Be Giants, Something Corporate, and Cross Canadian Ragweed.  Looking at those riders, we’re beginning to realize that we might have tried to catch a fish that’s still a little big for our nets.  By that I mean, TMBG wants us to hire security persons and have security checkpoints, have a 4 ft padded barrier between them and the audience, and 15 pages of other stipulations that we might not be able to afford.  Something Corporate’s rider is not as long, but still pretty extensive.  They are also more expensive than TMBG, which may pose a problem anyway.

We haven’t yet spoken to the Norton Center, but we did decide last week that we were going to have it outside, weather permitting.  Megan is planning on speaking to the Norton Center to see if they’ll be a possible rain location.

We also made a brief mention of committees that will need to be made for Carnival: Booths, foam dome and other inflatables, band, Centre bands, T-shirts and favors, food, set-up and take-down, and PR.  Be thinking about which particular committees you would be interested in working on.  We’re also thinking about making Carnival more like a real carnival with little novelties set up, where you can do sand art, make a wax hand, etc.  There was also mention about bringing the Oscar Meyer Weiner Mobile (great idea Jason!), since our mascot this year is the weiner.  This year’s Carnival promises to be a good one, provided we all pitch in and help.  We’re going to need all of you wonderful SAC’ers to be out there and working (not all day, b/c you need to have fun too), but remember that as part of this organization, you want to help this event be a success, so that next year we can make it even better.  If we prove to SGA that we can deliver on our promises (big band, fun times) they’ll give us more money, which will make it a little easier to bring to campus the kinds of events that we want to have.

I know it’s Centreterm, but we’ve got homework to do.  Next week we’re going to talk about themes for Carnival, so the homework is to think up some great Carnival themes!

Thanks for sticking with the minutes, they’re gi-huge-ic this week!
