The Minutes! In all their glorious splendor!

Stephanie reported on the status of our swing dancing event that is on Wednesday on the 1st floor of the Warehouse from 7-9.  There will be candy and refreshments, so all you need to do is bring a partner and your dancing shoes!  We’d also appreciate it if you could help out either with set-up at 6:30 or take-down at 9.  We really need more people at 9 to help us take-down, so we can help CCF get ready for their meeting.  They’re helping us out by letting us use the 1st floor of the Warehouse right up to their normal meeting time, so the least we can do is help them set up for their meeting too.

Kelly enlisted Tricia to help her with a Cowan sign for Data Match.  It will be free to the student body, and it starts this week!  We don’t need anyone to sit at a table, since it’s free, so all you have to do is get all your friends to do it!  The last day is Feb. 4th (first Friday of spring term), which means we’ll get them back on the 18th.  Kind of like having a second go at Valentine’s Day in case it doesn’t work out properly the first time around.

Thom (the tuna) told us about the proposal DSU came to us with today.  They are willing to give us manpower for Carnival if we give them money to help pay for a comedian they are bringing in during Diversity Days.  We voted tonight to give them no more than $3300, which would cover the balance of the cost of the comedian after they put in their money and donations from other organizations.  We had budgeted $5000 for convos and speakers, of which we’ve used $400, so this money is not going to come out of our Carnival budget.  SGA will smile upon us if they see that we’ve been charitable with our large budget, and may be more inclined to give us more money next year *biggerbetterfoamdome*  So the comedian will be on Friday Feb. 11th.  DSU already plans to do the PR for the event, and we’ll talk with them about other things that need to be done as the event draws nearer.

Megan presented us with part of her dissertation on Carnival bands.  She spoke to the Norton Center, and they won’t be a rain location.  There are lots of things involved when bringing in a large band, and decisions about location just can’t be made at the last minute.  Additionally, Apr. 9th is an admissions event (the day after Carnival), so it would require a little more work for us if we decided to have the concert in the Norton Center, since we’d also be good, responsible SAC’ers and help them set-up some tables for that event.

That said, it was imperative that we made a plan of action tonight.  We’ve done everything in our power to please as many people as we could, but we’ve gotten to the point where we needed to make a decision that would displease someone.  We decided tonight that we would continue with the outdoor concert, but because of the cost of having TMBG or Something Corporate outside would be too much for us, we’re going to go with Cross Canadian Ragweed.  Megan’s waiting on the people from Pyramid Sound and Lights to get back to her to tell her if the staging will or will not fit in the Warehouse (our rain location).  If their staging will not fit on the first floor of the Warehouse, then we will revert to plan B, which is pursuing TMBG as an indoor concert in the Norton Center.  If it comes to that, we will try as hard as we can to make tickets free for students, but we cannot guarantee that at this point in time.  What we do know, is that it will be a ticketed event, meaning that at the very least you must present your student ID at the box office to get a ticket.

With that said, please DO NOT tell anyone that we are definitely doing one thing or another.  We should know by tomorrow if CCR’s staging will work, but nothing is ironed out, and by no means is anything set in stone at this point in time.  If you have any questions regarding this decision, please feel free to ask any exec member or Megan.

Last on the docket, Ines presented us with a CD of a group of musicians she spoke to us about last week.  She brought a CD, and they sound great, so we decided to bring them in.  We’re giving them $250 and they’re going to play on Friday, Feb. 18th on the 1st floor of the Warehouse.

All done!

No meeting for 2 weeks!! Have a great rest of Centreterm and we’ll see everyone back in the spring!!
