Log on to the C.O.W. (computer on wheels)
Go to PROGRAMS; look for Adobe Photo Shop. Open it.

Go to FILE; select IMPORT; EPSON
TWAIN 5.
This will open the scanner
software.

If Scanner tries to scan automatically, hit Cancel and the manual menu will load.
Use the following settings:

Click and drag to select portion on the preview screen that you want scanned.
Hit the PREVIEW button (in the bottom right, above the large SCAN button). If everything looks good, hit SCAN. The image will be automatically sent to the Photo Shop software. You will edit and save your image in that program. To begin work in Photo Shop, you must close the scanner software. Or, if you need to create more scans, repeat the process, placing your new material on the flatbed. The scanner software will send all your images to Photo Shop and hold them for you.
Trouble Shooting:
The two most common problems are getting a clipped image or seeing a moire pattern (dots from the print in the book) appear in a scan from a printed page.
To remove the moiré pattern, click theIMAGE TYPE button; select the custom descreen color photo image type from the list on the left (the DE-SCREENING drop down menu on the right should be set ON) and rescan your image.
(on the left is a scan with a moire pattern, on the right is the same scan with the de-screening option)

(Source= size of the actual scan; Target= size it will print)
After creating your scan(s), you will need to close the Epson Scanner software. Your images will be visible in Photo Shop but all the options will be dimmed until the Scanner software is closed.
If your image is one you want to keep long term, first save it as a TIFF file, before you make any adjustments to it. To do this, Select SAVE AS; give it a name. Grab the Drop Down list SAVE AS TYPE and select the ending TIFF (Tagged Image File Format). Click Save. A second menu will appear, asking if you want to compress the file. "None" or no compression should automatically be selected, so hit OK.

If you forget this step, Photo Shop will automatically save your image in PSD or PDD format, which can only be read by the program itself.
A TIFF file is too large to e-mail, so you will either have to copy it to your campus network space or save it to a CD or zipdisk. (There are usually some blank CDs on Ann Silver's desk if you do not have one.)
Trouble Shooting:
You must first open your image file in Photo Shop to access any of the tools.
My image is crooked.
Select VIEW; Show; Grid to diplay a straight matrix on top of your image. Next
select Image; Rotate Canvas. These options will allow you to automatically rotate
your scan 180 degrees, 90 degrees clockwise, 90 degrees counter-clockwise. The
arbitrary option allows you to rotate your work however you please. It is usually
used for finer adjustments. To undo any action, use CONTROL plus "Z"
or go to Edit; Undo.
NOTE: To remove the grid, repeat: View; Show; Grid.

My image needs to be trimmed down. The tool bar palette contains a crop tool (Hover your mouse over the tools to show the tool names). To use the crop tool, click and drag around the area you want. Press ENTER and the unwanted unwanted border should disappear.

I don't see theTOOLS palette. Go to VIEW; Toolbars and click on the TOOLS palette.
Go to PROGRAMS; open ROXIO; select Easy CD Creator(or Direct CD program) Put blank CD in drive. Select FORMAT CD, then close application.
Go to MY COMPUTER or use EXPLORE (by right clicking on the START button in the bottom bar of your screen) and find the E drive (the CD drive). You may then select and drag your TIFF files to the E drive and they will be saved.
To SAVE an image to your network space: use the EXPLORE function of the START button to find your network storage space. The START menu will show you a tree with all your folders. Look down the list until you see your name in the F drive. You can drag or copy your large image files there and access them from anywhere on campus. All students and faculty have space under their own name on this drive.
Tiff files are too large to send as attachments. To e-mail your image, you will first have to resave it as a JPEG in Adobe Photoshop. This should reduce its size to approximately 2 mbs (less than 2000 kb). Save it to a place you can easily find, like your desktop. Then, log onto your campus e-mail account using the web browser.
From here you should be able to create a new e-mail and attach the jpeg you created and saved to the desktop (use the paperclip icon to attach the image).
