Introduction to using the Madison Digital Image Database 2

The MDID2 offers faculty an exciting new teaching tool. This searchable image library will allow you to create a slide lecture from your office and present it to your students in a technology classroom. Digital image lectures also mean your students can study and review your lecture over the campus network.

(You must have an account to create lectures. E-mail the Slide Library to open an account).

MAKE A LECTURE

Instructors access MDID2 by logging in to a secure web site.(https://slide-library.centre.edu/) Within MDID2, you can create new slide shows, edit existing slide shows, and then archive or activate slide shows to control student access.

To create a slide show after logging in, you will perform a search. Choose from fields offered by the drop down lists such as medium, country or period. You can also perform a word search using an artist's last name or a word like portrait or Madonna. After performing the search, MDID2 will return a group of images, visible in thumbnail views. A check box allows you to select or discard images for use in your lecture. After selections are made, the images are sent to a virtual light table.

The Light Table allows you to organize your image sequence, and add and delete images. Once your choices are made and the order is satisfactory, you will name and save your slide show to project in the classroom or for on-line study. You can also annotate your lecture here, adding comments for your student's enlightenment.

SHOW A LECTURE

To see your slide show in class, MDID2 uses a system component called ImageViewer. To access your show you will call up this program on the computer in your classroom and log in to it. Your list of available slide shows will appear and you will select the day's lecture. This should take just a moment before your class begins.

The ImageViewer offers a wonderful flexibility of presentation. Images can be projected singly, or on a split screen. You can enlarge an image and pan within it. Use one half of the screen to display a full view and the other part to examine a detail. Image data (such as name, date and title) and your own notes can be hidden or displayed with a click. Image comparisons can be made on the fly as class discussion progresses.

STUDENT ACCESS

After class, your students can review your lecture on any networked computer by logging in to the MDID website. (https://slide-library.centre.edu/) Students will log in using their campus e-mail and password,. This will take them to the SlideShow list, where they will select a faculty member and choose which lecture to review. From there, they can quiz themselves with an image review or print out your lecture and notes to study. Students do not have access to change your lecture.

COPYRIGHT

Only Centre College faculty and students can access images through MDID. This ensures that image viewing is limited to authenticated members of our campus for educational purposes. This falls within the Educational Multimedia Fair Use guidelines recommended by the Conference on Fair Use. http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/dcom/olia/confu/
